SCUBA TRAINING
ONE DIVE FAMILY
SDI (Scuba Diving International) and TDI (Technical Diving International) represent a modern, flexible, and diver-focused approach to training — from entry-level recreational courses through to advanced technical and professional programs.
Blue Ribbon Dive Resort was proudly a PADI 5-Star Resort for over 15 years. In 2024, after careful evaluation, we made the decision to transition our primary training affiliation to SDI/TDI. This change was driven by our belief that SDI/TDI currently offer better training structures, more flexibility for instructors, and stronger pathways for technical and advanced diving.
We also value choice, independence, and diversity within the diving industry. While we support inclusive diving and accessibility for everyone, we are not aligned with moves toward over-standardisation, excessive commercial pressure, or monopolisation of scuba training. A healthy dive industry thrives on multiple agencies, innovation, and instructors being free to choose the systems that best serve their students.
Today, as an SDI/TDI 5 ⭐ Dive Centre, we continue to deliver high-quality, globally recognised training — with the freedom to tailor courses to real-world diving, modern equipment, and evolving best practices.
Independent training. Better options. Divers first.
GARY TYSON
PHOTO / VIDEO TRAINING
Gary Tyson is our professional underwater photographer and filmmaker, offering bespoke 1-to-1 and small-group coaching in underwater photography and videography at Blue Ribbon Dive Resort.
Gary works internationally with underwater camera brands, scuba companies, liveaboards, and tourism boards, producing marketing films, storytelling projects, and national advertising campaigns. His work has been published worldwide and featured in Philippine tourism promotions.
With teaching experience across Asia and Europe, Gary’s approach is fully tailored to the diver — focusing on what you want to learn rather than fixed courses. He works with everything from action cameras and 360 systems to advanced mirrorless and DSLR setups with professional lighting.
Training can include in-water guidance, lighting and composition, image or video review, editing workflows, and honest feedback — or simply diving alongside a pro and picking up practical tips in real time.
Hosted at Blue Ribbon Dive Resort, this personalised training fits seamlessly into your dive holiday.
Shoot better. Learn faster. Dive with purpose.
Deep Blue Scuba Subic / Angeles
Deep Blue Scuba is run by Baz, a highly experienced dive professional who previously served as Dive Shop Manager at Blue Ribbon Dive Resort from 2010 to 2015, playing a key role in the resort’s early development and training operations. Now based in Angeles City and Subic Bay, Baz and his team focus on SDI training, offering structured, safety-driven diver education from entry-level through advanced courses. Deep Blue Scuba trains divers locally in pool and open-water environments and regularly organizes dive trips to Blue Ribbon Dive Resort, continuing a long-standing partnership built on shared standards, experience, and passion for quality diving.
Moalboal Dive Center Moalboal
Moalboal Dive Center is a long-established and highly respected dive operation in Moalboal, Cebu, led by Phil, the Regional Manager for TDI / SDI in the Philippines. Phil is widely known for his depth of experience in both recreational and technical diving and has personally trained Jon on a technical diving course. Beyond professional collaboration, Phil is also a close friend of the Blue Ribbon team. Moalboal Dive Center shares the same commitment to high training standards, diver development, and safe, progressive technical education, making them a trusted partner within our extended diving network.
ECOLOGICAL
GREEN FINS
A conservation initiative by Reef‑World
Green Fins, a global initiative led by Reef-World, works with dive centres and resorts to reduce the environmental impact of diving and protect fragile coral reef ecosystems. Their practical guidelines help operators, instructors, and divers make real, measurable changes underwater and on land.
At Blue Ribbon Dive Resort, we actively support Green Fins principles. We have worked directly with Green Fins and Reef-World, hosting and participating in organised coastal and underwater clean-ups, and continuously improving our day-to-day practices.
We aim to operate as a plastic-free resort wherever possible, reduce waste, minimise reef impact, and are always working to lower our carbon footprint. Environmental responsibility isn’t a checkbox for us — it’s an ongoing commitment that evolves as better solutions become available.
Protecting reefs today means better diving tomorrow.
EQUIPMENT PROVIDERS
Apeks
Apeks regulators are used throughout Blue Ribbon for both recreational and technical diving. Known for reliability, durability, and smooth breathing performance, Apeks equipment is trusted daily by our instructors and guides.
For technical diving, we also use Apeks TEK3 regulators. Their left- and right-handed first stages allow for clean, logical hose routing, making them ideal for twinset, sidemount, and decompression configurations.
We choose Apeks because the equipment performs consistently in real-world conditions — from entry-level training to demanding technical dives.
Aqualung
Aqualung BCDs are used throughout Blue Ribbon for daily diving and training. Known for comfort, durability, and practical design, Aqualung BCDs perform reliably for both beginner divers and experienced professionals across a wide range of dive conditions.
Aqualung / Apeks Service Tecnicians
All of our instructors are trained and certified Aqualung and Apeks service technicians, ensuring our equipment is properly maintained, serviced, and tuned in-house. This gives our divers added confidence that the gear they use is safe, well cared for, and ready for real-world diving.
SUEX
SUEX DPVs are a core part of our technical diving operations at Blue Ribbon. Renowned for reliability, power, and precise control, Suex scooters are trusted worldwide for exploration, range, and efficiency underwater.
We operate a fleet of Suex VRX and Suex Quantum scooters, used for technical training, extended-range dives, and exploration projects. These DPVs allow us to cover more ground safely, manage gas and time efficiently, and access sites that would be impractical without propulsion.
We choose Suex because their scooters perform consistently in demanding conditions — from training dives to serious exploration.
HOTELS AND HOSTELS
BENTRINA
When Blue Ribbon is fully booked (because word gets out fast about our courses and critter dives!), many of our divers find a welcoming second home at Bentrina Diving Resort just down the road in Mabini.
Nestled right in one of the world’s finest diving areas, Bentrina offers a relaxed, private atmosphere with ocean-view rooms and all the basics you need for a great stay. Whether you’re heading out for another day of mucking around with hairy squat lobsters or just want a peaceful sunset by the pool, it’s got that laid-back tropical vibe that complements the dive experience.
Guests often rave about the friendly staff, delicious local food, and chill common areas — perfect for swapping dive stories after a day with us. And because it’s right on the water with stunning views and easy access to the reefs, it’s not just practical — it feels like a true Anilao getaway.
So if you’re planning a dive trip and want options beyond Blue Ribbon’s full house, Bentrina is a great choice. Many of our divers return year after year — some call it a home away from home.
GOVERNMENTAL & INTERNATIONAL
DEPARTMENT OF TOURISM
Blue Ribbon Dive Resort proudly works in partnership with the Department of Tourism (DOT) Philippines, supporting the promotion of the Philippines as one of the world’s premier scuba diving destinations.
Through this partnership, we actively contribute to responsible dive tourism, local community engagement, and international marketing initiatives that highlight the country’s rich marine biodiversity — particularly the world-class diving of Anilao.
We have participated in DOT-led promotions, campaigns, and events, helping showcase Philippine diving to both local and international audiences. Our focus aligns with the DOT’s vision of sustainable, high-quality tourism that benefits local communities while protecting the natural environment.
Promoting Philippine diving — responsibly, sustainably, and globally.
Philippine Commission on Sports Scuba Diving
At Blue Ribbon, we actively support the work of Philippine Commission on Sports Scuba Diving (PCSSD), the national body responsible for overseeing and promoting safe, responsible scuba diving across the Philippines.
PCSSD plays a key role in setting local diving guidelines, supporting dive operators, and working closely with tourism and environmental stakeholders to ensure that scuba diving in the Philippines remains both safe and sustainable. Their standards help align international training agencies with local regulations, benefiting divers, instructors, and resorts alike.
As a dive resort operating year-round in Anilao, we recognise the importance of PCSSD’s work in maintaining high safety standards and protecting the long-term future of Philippine dive destinations. By working within these frameworks, we help ensure that divers visiting the Philippines enjoy world-class diving while respecting local communities and marine environments.
PCSSD’s ongoing efforts contribute directly to the Philippines’ reputation as one of the world’s premier diving destinations — something we’re proud to be part of at Blue Ribbon.
